Leading Moose Attend Carney Class Service

Attorney General Dever is Among Speakers at Lodge Initiation

 

Several Prominent persons, including ATtorney Gerneral Paul A. Dever were present last night at the initiation fo the “Mayor Leo E. J. Carney Class” in the Loyal Order of Moose. The class was named after the mayor who became a member.

In addition to the mayor and attorney-general, those present included William C. Crossley, district attorney; Dr. William Rosen, medical Examiner, Attorney Barney Papkin and Harry Jeffers of Mooseheart, Ill., Director of the Moose. All of the guests made remarks with the exception of Mr. Jeffers who arrived too late for the speaking program.

The attorney-general complimented local Moose for the part the order plays in inspiring true Americanism and pointed out that their patriotic endeavors and humane activities deserved the greatest commendation. He lauded the objectives of the Moose children’s home at Mooseheart and said that membership in the order and good citizenship go hand in hand.

Mayor Carney paid tribute to the part the local lodge has taken in local industry through its “Aid to Industrial Development Committee.” He extended the fullest cooperation of his office in this endeavor and also for the Moose Safety Drive to be held in conjunction with the Motor Registry. The Safety Drive Committee will meet next Tuesday night at the lodge home.

The Mayor was presented with a lodge button by District Attorney Crossley. Dever was introduced by Barney Papkin. Dr. Abraham Portnoy presided at the meeting and banquet.

When the Attorney General arrived yesterday afternoon he was greeted by a committee comprising Maurice Hanna, Chairman; Dr. Rosen, and Barney Papkin and tendered a dinner at the New Bedford Hotel at which Mayor Carney and Mr. Crossley were present.

The local lodge in the future will hold bi-monthly meetings on the first and third Tuesday of the month.

The New Bedford degree team under the direction of Manuel Gracia Jr., junior past dictator, was in charge of the ritual and was assisted by the drill team under the leadership of Anthony B. Silvia.
